おっさんとギター ♥ Ossan to Gitā ♥ The Old Bloke and His Guitar

隣のおっさんは　

Tonari no ossan wa

Every day, the bloke next door

毎日疲れた顔して

mainichi tsukareta kao shite

puts on a tired face

夕暮れ16時くらいに　

yūgure jūrokuji kurai ni

and around four in the afternoon

バイトに出掛けて行くのさ

baito ni dekakete iku no sa

sets off to his part-time job.

帰る頃は真っ暗な　

Kaeru koro wa makkura na

When he gets home it's dark

深夜の24時ぐらいで

shin'ya no nijūyoji gurai de

and very late, around midnight,

遅過ぎる晩御飯は　

ososugiru bangohan wa

and his overdue dinner

売れ残りの弁当

urenokori no bentō

is what lunchbox leftovers he can buy.

隣のおっさんは　

Tonari no ossan wa

The bloke next door seems to have

どうやら水木休みで

dōyara sui moku yasumi de

Wednesdays and Thursdays off

大抵は一日中　

taitei wa ichinichijū

and usually spends all day

部屋の中ひとりぼっちさ

heya no naka hitoribotchi sa

alone in his room.

趣味なのか知らないけれど　

Shumi na no ka shiranai keredo

I don't know what pastimes he's got

アコースティックギター持っていて

akōsutikku gitā motte ite

but he has an acoustic guitar

夕暮れ17時くらいに　

yūgure jūshichiji kurai ni

and around five in the afternoon

かき鳴らしだすんだ

kakinarashidasu n da

he begins to strum.

お世辞にも上手いとは言えない

Oseji ni mo umai to wa ienai

You can't say he's good at it by any means.

下手くそなギターの音にのせて歌う　

Hetakuso na gitā no oto ni nosete utau

He sings to the lousy sound of his guitar.

それは 甘くはなく　

Sore wa amaku wa naku

It's not sweet,

苦いだけで切ない

nigai dake de setsunai

it's always sad and bitter.

よれよれ　かすれた歌声が　

Yoreyore kasureta utagoe ga

His voice, worn out and hoarse,

近所に響いていた

kinjo ni hibiite ita

echoed around the neighbourhood.

昔は良かったなんて言葉　

Mukashi wa yokatta nante kotoba

Once upon a time he was good—words

口からこぼれたりして

kuchi kara koboretari shite

to that effect would leave his mouth,

現在（今）の自分が嫌になるけど

ima no jibun ga iya ni naru kedo

even if what he's like now is awful.

錆付いた六弦は　

Sabitsuita rokugen wa

His rusty six strings

裏切る事はしないよ

uraigiru koto wa shinai yo

never let him down.

涙流して　鼻水垂らして

Namida nagashite hanamizu tarashite

He sheds tears, his nose drips,

雨上がり虹を待っている

ameagari niji o matte iru

and he waits for the rainbow after the rain.

幸せな人生目指して　

Shiawase na jinsei mezashite

Was he aiming for a happy life

ひたすら歩んできたのだろうか

hitasura ayunde kita no darō ka

as he earnestly came this far?

上手くいかないね。

Umaku ikanai ne.

It's not going well, is it?

良いこと少なく　悪いことはいっぱい

Ii koto sukunaku warui koto wa ippai

Not much good, plenty of bad.

それでも歯車と化して　

Soredemo haguruma to kashite

Yet even so, will he be another cog in society

明日を生き抜こうか

asu o ikinukō ka

and see through another day?

下手くそなギターの歌が　

Hetakuso na gitā no uta ga

The lousy songs of his guitar

近所に響いていた

kinjo ni hibiite ita

echoed around the neighbourhood.

夕暮れ18時くらいに　

Yūgure jūhachiji kurai ni

Around six in the evening

壁叩かれました･･･

kabe tatakaremashita …

the neighbours were banging on his wall …
