Dancing in the sky like a bird,

自由を手にして

grasping freedom,

居場所を求めた　

ibasho o motometa

seeking a place to belong,

少年の夢は

shōnen no yume wa

a boy's dream

愛の中で満ち足りたい　

ai no naka de michitaritai

was the trifle

些細なものだと

sasai na mono da to

of being content in a loving world,

気付くと同じく　

kizuku to onajiku

which, when he realizes,

白い翼が散っていく

shiroi tsubasa ga chitte yuku

his white wings will likewise scatter away.

前を見れば　何もない世界

Mae o mireba nani mo nai sekai

Before him lay an empty world.

何かを創るのは　自身の存在

Nanika o tsukuru no wa jishin no sonzai

The one to create something is himself,

例えるなら　砂漠のサボテン

tatoeru nara sabaku no saboten

such as the cactuses in the desert,

そこに居る意味など　問わないで

soko ni iru imi nado towanaide

without asking the meaning behind his being there.

叙情詩に伝えられる　

Jojōshi ni tsutaerareru

As told in a lyric poem,

天使の歌が導いて

tenshi no uta ga michibiite

an angel's song leading the way …

雲の上で　君のことを　

Kumo no ue de kimi no koto o

It will be waiting for you

待っているだろう

above the clouds.

翼を広げて　

Tsubasa o hirogete

Spread your wings

確かめてごらん

tashikamete goran

and see for yourself.

きっとそこで　見える太陽　

Kitto soko de mieru taiyō

Surely the sun you see there

とても美しく

totemo utsukushiku

very beautifully

輝き放って　

kagayaki hanatte

shines forth

君の翼を照らし出す

kimi no tsubasa o terashidasu

and illuminates your wings.

羽が舞い上がって　

Hane ga maiagatte

His wings soaring up,

一人で旅立った

hitori de tabitatta

he began his journey alone.

目指すものもなくて　

Mezasu mono mo nakute

Though without a goal

それなのに　世界は動き出した

sore na no ni sekai wa ugokidashita

the world started to move.

Kimi no mae ni tatta watashi ni wa

Standing in front of you,

ひとつだけ伝える言葉がある

hitotsu dake tsutaeru kotoba ga aru

I have but one thing to tell you:

「あとどれだけ　自由になっても

“Ato dore dake jiyū ni natte mo

“No matter how much freer you become,

空を手に入れることは出来ない」

sora o te ni ireru koto wa dekinai”

there is no way for you to grasp the sky.”

少年は　与えられた

Shōnen wa ataerareta

The boy will search for the meaning

翼の意味を探すだろう

tsubasa no imi o sagasu darō

behind the wings he was given.

空の果ての　向こう側の　

Sora no hate no mukōgawa no

To the ends of the sky

もっと遠くへと

motto tōku e to

and further beyond,

翼が持つまで　

tsubasa ga motsu made

if you fly as far as your wings last,

飛んだらわかるさ

tondara wakaru sa

you will understand

終着点　どこを見ても　

Shūchakuten doko o mite mo

You will never find your destination

見当たらないだろう

miataranai darō

no matter where you look

自由という名の　

jiyū to iu na no

when you notice the illusion

虚像に気付いたときに

kyozō ni kizuita toki ni

of what is called freedom.

不安になるのか　

Fuan ni naru no ka

Will you feel uneasy?

胸を撫で下ろすのか

mune o nadeorosu no ka

Will you be relieved?

二つに一つでも　

futatsu ni hitotsu de mo

Either way,

目の前の世界が全てだと知る

me no mae no sekai ga subete da to shiru

you'll find out that the world before your eyes is all there is.

Jojōshi ga tsuzuridashita

As portrayed by the lyric poem,

天使の姿は泣いていた

tenshi no sugata wa naite ita

the angel appeared to be weeping.

その翼で見える景色　

Sono tsubasa de mieru keshiki

What you see using your wings

無限に広がる

mugen ni hirogaru

spreads out forever.

手に触れたものだけ　

Te ni fureta mono dake

Only what you touch with your hands

真実の世界

shinjitsu no sekai

is the real world.

「わかってる」と　翼閉じて　

“Wakatte'ru” to tsubasa tojite

“I understand,” he said, folded his wings,

大地を踏みしめ

daichi o fumishime

set foot on the ground,

眼差しは　ずっと

manazashi wa zutto

and stared out

遠くの空を　見つめてる

tōku no sora o mitsumete'ru

at the distant sky.
