中秋の夜空に浮かぶ

chūshū no yozora ni ukabu

In the night sky of the Mid-Autumn Festival

麗しき十五夜の月

uruwashiki jūgoya no tsuki

floats the beautiful moon of that night.

顔隠す　袂たまとの端から

kao kakusu tamoto no ha kara

From the edge of the kimono sleeve hiding my face

月灯り　ほのかに滲む

tsukiakari honoka ni nijimu

the light of the moon lightly bleeds through.

千年伝う物語

sennen tsutau monogatari

A story handed down over a thousand years

今も尚　褪あせること無く

ima mo nao aseru koto naku

without losing its colour even to the present,

古の人々もまた

inishie no hitobito mo mata

the people of old again

赫かがやく月を慕う

kagayaku tsuki o shitau

yearn for the shining moon.

月の影に隠れて

tsuki no kage ni kakurete

The resounding voice of insects

響く虫の声

hibiku mushi no koe

hiding within the shape of the moon

物憂げな夜を

monouge na yoru o

beautifully decorates this weary night

赫かがやく月と彩あやなすもの

kagayaku tsuki to ayanasu mono

together with the shining moon.

月の雫が芒すすきを濡らし

tsuki no shizuku ga susuki o nurashi

Moon drops wet the pampas grass

涙模様の景色と変える

namida moyō no keshiki to kaeru

and it changes to look like tears.

遙かな時を繋つなぐ想いは

haruka na toki o tsunagu omoi wa

Feelings that link distant times

今宵も赫かがやく月へ

koyoi mo kagayaku tsuki e

are again tonight sent toward the moon.

彼の者に寄り添った者

kano mono ni yorisotta mono

Those who drew close to someone

彼の者に憧れた者

kano mono ni akogareta mono

those who were wanted by someone

彼の者を愛しんだ者

kano mono o itoshinda mono

those who dearly loved someone

無情に露と消える

mujō ni tsuyu to kieru

cruelly disappear with the dew.

月の影を揺らして

tsuki no kage o yurashite

Making the moon quiver,

そよぐ十五夜草

soyogu jūgoyasō

rustling, swaying asters

儚はかなげな夜を

hakanage na yoru o

beautifully decorate this passing night

赫かがやく月と彩なすもの

kagayaku tsuki to ayanasu mono

together with the shining moon.

月の雫が芒すすきを濡らし

tsuki no shizuku ga susuki o nurashi

Moon drops wet the pampas grass

泡沫の夜が月へと帰る

utakata no yo ga tsuki e to kaeru

and this transient night returns to the moon.

哀しき虚そらに抱く想いは

kanashiki sora ni idaku omoi wa

The feelings we embrace on this sorrowful night

あの日も赫かがやく月へ

ano hi mo kagayaku tsuki e

also return to the shining moon on that day.

jūnen saki mo hyakunen saki mo

Whether ten or a hundred years hence

千年先も変わらぬのでしょう

sennen saki mo kawaranu no deshō

or a thousand it will not change.

夜空に浮かぶ輪廻の華は

yozora ni ukabu rinne no hana wa

Flowers of the circle of life floating in the night sky

生者を今宵も誘う

shōja o koyoi mo izanau

call to the living again tonight.

月の雫が夜風に吹かれ

tsuki no shizuku ga yokaze ni fukare

Moon drops are blown by the wind,

秋の蛍が飛び交う様に

aki no hotaru ga tobikau yō ni

and, like autumn fireflies flitting about,

一つ一つの儚はかなき夢が

hitotsu hitotsu no hakanaki yume ga

one fleeting dream after another

空へ還る

sora e kaeru

returns to the sky.
