Where do the leaves go flowing down the stream?

涼しくなればまたあの匂いで

suzushiku nareba mata ano noie de

When it gets cooler, there's that scent again

空気が変わる　私居ぬ間に

kūki ga kawaru watashi inu ma ni

The air has changed while I was away

ひとりぼっちの大きなボタンの自販機

hitoribotchi no ōkina botan no jihanki

A lonely looking vending machine with a huge button

立て札のそばに

tatefuda no soba ni

stands next to a sign

錆びたプルタブの束　今年はもうひとつ

sabita purutabu no taba kotoshi wa mō hitotsu

This year I make a noise adding another pull-tab

加えて鳴らす

kuwaete narasu

to the rusty pile

見渡せば　同じようでなにか違う景色

miwataseba onaji yō de nanika chigau keshiki

When I look over the scene, it seems the same but something's different

ちょっとだけ寂しい歩む足音は

chotto dake sabishii ayumu ashioto wa

My lonely sounding footsteps as I walk

ひとりでに速くなって　立ち止まるその時

hitorideni hayaku natte tachidomaru sono toki

automatically speed up then stop still

そっと吹くぬるいかぜ　ただいまヒグラシ

sotto fuku nurui kaze tadaima higurashi

at which point a gentle warm breeze blows — I'm home Higurashi

湿気た畳　大の字になって

shiketa tatami dainoji ni natte

On the damp tatami floor I stretch out my arms and legs

想いを馳せる　ガラじゃないよね

omoi o haseru gara ja nai yo ne

and nostalgically cast my thoughts, uncharacteristic of me as it is

裏山の上　刻んだ名前を

urayama no ue kizanda namae o

While I think about the names carved at the top

思い出したらスイカをがぶり

omoidashitara suika o gaburi

of the mountain out the back, I gulp down some watermelon

てっぺんに登って　それはとても低くて

teppen ni nobotte sore wa totemo hikukute

When I climb to the top, the town looks way low

がっかりしたけど

gakkari shita kedo

and I get a sense of let down

こんなもんかと繕い　枝を戻し

konna mon ka to tsukuroi eda o modoshi

But I say "Is that how it is?" to console myself, let the branches go back,

背中を向ける

senaka o mukeru

and turn the other way

山へ消える道

On the road that disappears towards the mountain

割れたアスファルト　そこから伸びる草を

weeds grow from the cracked asphalt

去り際撫でて

sarigiwa nadete

which I rub against as I leave

振り向けば　私の影引き止める夕陽の

furimukeba watashi no kage hikitomeru yūhi no

When I look back, my shadow cast by the setting sun stops moving

ちょっとだけ寂しい　それが良いのかな

chotto dake sabishii sore ga ii no ka na

It feels just a bit lonely, but maybe that's OK

見下ろせば　あなたのいる　あの町は輝き

mioroseba anata no iru ano machi wa kagayaki

When I look down, the town where you live glistens

そっと吹くぬるいかぜ　さよなら

sotto fuku nurui kaze sayonara

Goodbye to the gentle warm wind blowing

気が付けば　虫の声は途切れ途切れになり

ki ga tsukeba mushi no koe wa togiretogire ni nari

When I notice, the sound of the insects starts breaking up

ちょっとだけ寂しく　夏が終わるよと

marking the end of summer making me feel a bit lonely

見上げれば　紅く蒼く空は陰るけれど

miagereba akaku aoku sora wa kageru keredo

When I look up, the sky darkens blue and red

もう少しまだ少し　さよならヒグラシ

mō sukoshi mada sukoshi sayonara higurashi

but for a bit longer, still a bit longer, goodbye Higurashi
